Animals and Species
For the vast majority of animals, the assignment of gender is random and unrelated to their natural gender (sex). Only names of animals raised or hunted by man have a gender motivated by their physiology: une jument f. / un étalon m.
Names of
animals and species can be divided into 3 different cases.

Rare feminine irregularities: souris (chauve-souris), fourmi, perdrix (f.) ;
Main animal families are masculine:
insecte(s), reptile(s), mammifère(s), mollusque(s), batracien(s), rapace(s), primate(s), bovin(s), cétacé(s), fauve(s), herbivore(s), bovidé(s)... ;
Names of specific races follow the gender of the specie of reference:
Chiens (m.): dalmatien, colley, caniche…
Vaches (f.): limousine, normande, hollandaise…
